Summer Nights - A Personal Project

Although it has been almost seven whole years since my last blog post, I am dusting it off and trying my hand at it again. In an effort to get myself back into the spirit that originally generated my love for photography, I set out to take photos of the more day-to-day sights that I might easily overlook. Placing myself in more of an observer than a creator role is an experiment I’d like to continue to revisit.

During an average weeknight in the summer time, I will usually eat dinner right after coming home from work. About an hour after my dinner, it is then time for my dog Gunther’s dinner. This must happen at 6:30 sharp, or the stress of anticipation becomes entirely too much for his little doggy brain to handle. After his dinner, though, he immediately switches gears for excitement to go run around in the backyard while my mom or I water the garden.

He brings along a ball for one or both of us to toss around in between weeding and watering different vegetable plots. His behavior during the waiting times in between ball throws is mostly good, but occasionally he will get impatient and try to go and consume an entire stick out of frustration. We try to nip this behavior in the bud for the sake of preventing unwanted bouts of spicy hot diarrhea. In other news, though, I started to notice the beauty of the golden sunset light and how it reflected off of the hose water and newly sprouted vegetable plants.

Most importantly, I noticed the sunset reflecting off of the truly contented and contemplative face of my mother. I’m reminded during these little moments of how grateful I am that she is in good health and loves to be outdoors. So grateful that she is willing and actually enjoys helping out in the garden. Finally, that she shares my love of being silent in nature and taking it all in on a daily basis.

I wanted these images to evoke feelings of home, connection with nature, and the magic of the sunset peeking through the leaves. Breathing in the slowly cooling warm air of a summer night while listening to the birds settling into the large old trees around us, is a simple memory that I will cherish for the rest of my life.
